We are absolutely in love with the photos we just got back from Vanessa Lentine Photography of our California Casual home in Carlsbad! This client was an absolute dream to work with, and the images are dreamy too.
This home's architecture has a little touch of Spanish Modern, so when we talked about how to re-face their fireplace, it was important to have something with character that also didn't conflict with that existing style. We went with Tabarka Studio's Mediterranean 26 tile and a reclaimed wood beam from Vintage Timberworks for the fireplace facelift, and LOVE how it turned out! The client was torn between brick and this tile, but we were both so happy with the way this tile ties into their home's subtle Spanish style.Â
It was really important to the client to incorporate a lot of character in this home, which was so exciting to us as a design challenge! We loved sourcing vintage African mudcloth, Batik Hmong and indigo textile pillows, as well as the two show stoppers of the space - the mid century rocking chairs upholstered in a vintage Chinese textile.Â
We layered natural textures throughout, using this chunky jute rug with the natural warmth and roughness in both the coffee table and mantle to ground the space. These warmer elements also enhanced the casual coastal feel that honors the home's southern California locale.Â
In styling this space, we focused on keeping things minimal but interesting - opting to stick to our favorite, "Want better, not more" mantra. Layering in newer items alongside pieces with history, like a vintage wood serving board and an antique textile print, all kept the home feeling curated without getting cluttered.Â
A lot of clients ask us what the 'rules' are for design. You might think cool colors can't be paired with warm, old items won't look right along side new, or that you can't make something mid-century work with in a Spanish home, but that's simply not true. Incorporating things with history is what makes a house feel like home. For instance, the client's family heirloom piano was given a facelift with a fresh coat of paint and new brass hardware, and now is the focal point of their foyer.
A space designed thoughtfully with balance in mind can always work - take the entry, below for example. Personally, we think the most sophisticated spaces are the ones that have a successful mix of styles- curated and bespoke.Â
